There will be photos

Matthew Nistor will be our photographer. He's just starting out and has a good eye for composition. We're very happy to have him on board.

Check out his website here.

We also want all your photos too. So please bring a camera. Hannah makes the cutest face when she's dancing. If you're lucky you might get it.

We have food

Day 1:

Yay. That's orzo. The lamb according Hannah was also really nice. We also replaced the chicken with Tilapia.

The lamb is actually baby lamb. That's some really young meat.

St John the Divine.

We had a fascinating tour in the Cathedral on Saturday through the nave and up to the roof. Currently the nave is closed because of a fire in 2001. So this tour is currently the only way to take a peak.

We had a really nice guy who was knew a lot about the church. Although he did ask if Samuel Beckett was a martyr. Hannah put him straight.

The tour takes you up the internal stairs directly behind the swimming snowmen. The guide first takes you through a door where the renovation work is happening. The space and colours jump out first. Then the windows.

Traditionally in Anglican churches the west end (the nave) of the church was identified with the laity and the east end with the priests and the choristers. Its with this in mind that the Rose Window high above the entrance to the nave, designed by Ralph Adams Cram, has in its center a human size figure of Jesus at 5' 7" high.

I'd never really thought about the direction you enter a church. But it all fits enter from the west leaving behind the noise of Amsterdam Av then move through the church to the silence in the east.

For record keepers you get 2 points here. St John the Divine has the longest nave at 230 feet and the largest rose window at 40 feet diameter in North America.

The geometry of the window is fascinating. Read this for more.

Here are a few more pictures and you can see more here.

The dark brown colour on one of the arches was caused by smoke from the 2001 fire. The fire did little damage however the smoke discoloured all of the limestone interior.

Wedding Hotel Hunt

We went to see a couple of hotels this weekend to figure out which ones we want to recommend for people to stay in.

The Lucerne looks very nice and is our favourite so far. Trivia corner- this place was initially constructed in 1903 as a dorm for Columbia University students. Erm..a con of this place is listed as "The visual style and bourgeois neighborhood may be too staid for some."

The Hotel Belleclaire is ok, nothing great. "For romantic travelers and especially budget conscious families" according to one review.

We have a couple of others to go to also

Amsterdamn Inn is looking for good for people on a budget. No lift (elevator) though so don't bring the kitchen sink.

Engagement Wine

First had a bottle of this in Bordeaux when Hannah was there. I found it again in Midtown Manhatten and celebrated our engagement with a bottle of the stuff

I think the wine doctor's quote for the 2003 exceeds my explanation of it being tasty.

"This has the now quite familiar mark of 2003 on the nose, exotic cherry fruit, but marked with a deeper, complex, smoked meat note. On the palate, a pleasing extract and texture is balanced by a level of acidity which is handsome for the vintage. Overall this has a very nice style, and shows the quality that could be achieved in St Estèphe in this atypical year. A good wine, where the superficial appeal is matched by some depth and appropriate structure. Very impressive."
